PELLA — Central College landed 65 student-athletes on the fall sports American Rivers Conference all-academic team Friday.
Across the league, 566 total student-athletes were honored.
A total of eight seniors earned the honor for the third consecutive year, which is normally the maximum possible as freshmen are not eligible for selections. Fifth-year senior
Drew Smith (Joliet, Ill./West HS) was recognized for the fourth time. The eight three-time selections were football players
Blaine Hawkins (Ankeny) and Josh Kuiper (Grundy Center); women's tennis players
Katie Larson (Fort Madison), Alyssa Lewton (Ankeny, Centennial HS) and
Sarah Schirm (Cedar Rapids, Xavier HS); volleyball players
Krissa Larson (Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) and
Landry Luhring (Grundy Center); and women's soccer player
Sydney Canney (Adel, ADM HS)
Volleyball had a league-high 16 players honored, the most of any Central team. Football added 13 and women's cross country had nine.
To qualify for the distinction, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic standing with one year at his/her current school, achieve a 3.5 GPA or better and compete at the varsity level.
