Central College Athletics

John Edwards has spent 48 years on the Central staff, retiring as associate athletics director for operations in 2015. He continues to serve as groundskeeper for the Central baseball and softball fields and is in his sixth season as a volunteer assistant softball coach.

A native of San Jose, California, Edwards is a 1972 graduate of Central where he earned eight varsity letters in football and baseball and was selected three consecutive years to the All-NAIA District 15 team in baseball, receiving NAIA all-America honorable mention in 1970. Edwards also served as an assistant football coach for the Dutch for 24 seasons and was the head baseball coach for 25 years (1978-2002). He was the college’s interim athletics director for the 1996-97 academic year and again in 2005-06.
