PELLA — The potent Central College women's soccer offense penetrated a stingy Hamline University (Minn.) defense twice for a 2-1 win Saturday.
Hamline (4-1-0) had shut out its four opponents before travelling to Pella. The Dutch (4-1-0) came in averaging over four goals a game but needed just two to hand the Pipers their first defeat.
"We played a full 90 minutes today as a unit," coach
Mike Kobylinski said. "Hamline is a good side. It's very satisfying to be sitting at 4-1-0 through five matches."
Olivia DeVos (junior, Altoona, Southeast Polk HS) added her team leading fourth and fifth goals in the second half to give Central a 2-0 lead in the 65th minute. Defender
Emerson Holle (sophomore, Gardner, Kan., Gardner-Edgerton HS) contributed a long assist on the second goal.
Hamline threatened late with a goal in the 74th minute but goalkeeper
Zoey Sizemore (senior, Omaha, Neb., Mercy HS) made four saves to hang on to the win.
"We had some brilliant finishes today and some timely defense," Kobylinski said. "Our back line and goalkeeper play were strong and disciplined as always."
The Dutch travel to the University of Northwestern-St. Paul (Minn.) for a 2 p.m. match Wednesday.
