PELLA — A complete game pitching performances from Brayden Sawyer (senior, Grundy Center) spearheaded the Central College baseball team's 7-2 win over Buena Vista University Tuesday.
Central (12-14, 7-5 American Rivers Conference) lost the first game Tuesday 7-6 but won the series 2-1 after beating Buena Vista (6-20, 2-10 A-R-C) 8-5 last Tuesday in Storm Lake. It's Central first series win over the Beavers since 2015.
Sawyer allowed just two earned runs in his complete game pitching performance. He walked none, struck out three and scattered seven hits.
All three of Bryer Wiley's (sophomore, second base, Urbana, Center Point-Urbana HS) hits in game two resulted in an RBI, including an RBI double in the eighth. Third baseman Dylan Williams (senior, Woods Cross, Utah) also had three hits as he scored twice. Sawyer also drove in two runs
Center fielder Max Steinlage (senior, Cedar Falls) and right fielder Jaden Kramer (senior, Cedar Falls) also added two hits.
In the opener, Jackson Torbit (sophomore, St. Louis, Mo., Webster Groves HS) led the Dutch with three hits and two runs scored. Steinlage and left fielder Stephen Stufflebeam (junior, Macomb, Ill.) also had two hits.
Central led for much of the game but three runs by the Beavers in the final two frames put the Dutch in a 7-4 hole entering the ninth inning. Torbit and Sawyer each had RBI hits in the ninth and Sawyer was the game-tying run on second base when the final out was recorded.
Wiley took the loss on the mound, allowing four earned runs in 7.1 innings of work. He struck out five but walked four and allowed nine hits.
Central travels to Decorah for a three-game series against Luther College this weekend, starting at 3 p.m. Friday.
