Dutch women’s hot soccer start continues

Central merits ninth win 10 in first 10 matches

PELLA — Winning 2-1 over Nebraska Wesleyan University Wednesday afternoon helped the Central College women's soccer team to its best 10-game start to the season since 2017.

The Dutch (9-1) matched the 2017's squad nine wins in its first 10 contests by beating the Prairie Wolves (3-6-1).

Kylie Bloomstrom (junior, Forest Lake, Minn., Forest Lake Area HS) scored the game's first goal in the 12th minute. Starting with a corner kick, Piper Eighmy (senior, Birmingham, Ala. Briarwood Christian HS) headed the ball across the box to Olivia DeVos (junior, Altoona, Southeast Polk HS) who flicked it backwards over her head to Bloomstrom.

The Dutch made it a 2-0 lead 25 minutes later when Rachel Mendlik (junior, Spring Grove, Ill., Richmond-Burton HS) scored her first goal of the season with an assist from Emma Klosterman (junior, Aurora, Ill., Oswego East HS)

The Prairie Wolves scored with 22 seconds left in the first half to narrow the lead. But neither team scored in the second half.

"We continue to find ways to win," coach Mike Kobylinski said. "We had our 11th different goal scorer today. We scored once on a set piece and once through the run of play. It's nice we can be dangerous in both phases."

Central outshot Nebraska Wesleyan 19-7 but the teams were even with four shots on goal. Central had an additional shot attempt go off the cross bar on a Rylee Rustad (senior, Gilbert, Ariz., Casteel HS) free kick. Zoey Sizemore (senior, Omaha, Neb., Mercy HS) made three saves while playing the full 90 minutes in goal.

"Our defense was once again sound," Kobylinski said. "We will take the three points against a good Nebraska Wesleyan side who is well coached."

The Dutch play at Coe College Saturday at 5 p.m.
