WAVERLY— The Central College softball team swept a double header against the American Rivers Conference-leading Wartburg College Tuesday.
The Dutch (22-6, 7-3 American Rivers) battled for a 1-0 win in 10 innings in the opening game, following that with an 8-5 win in the second game.
"The first game was an incredible softball game between two really good teams," said coach
George Wares. "This team can win in many different ways, and the second game was like two different teams playing each other."
Emma Beck (junior, Holland, Grundy Center HS) pitched a complete game shutout in the first game. She went all 10 innings allowing only eight hits and two walks while also adding a strikeout.
"Beck had tremendous location on her pitches, and we were able to keep her pitch count down, said Wares. "She was also able to gut it out including escaping a bases loaded no out jam."
The Dutch totaled nine hits and drew eight walks but left 12 runners on base. First baseman
Addi Starr (freshman, Ankeny, Centennial HS) had the game winning RBI single in the top of the 10th inning. She had two hits in the game. Third baseman
Hannah Higgins (junior, Macomb, Ill.) also had two hits and she scored the only run.
"[Starr] continues to get better and better, and it showed today," Wares said. "She saw a lot of off-speed and was able to sit back and go with the pitches."
It was an offensive explosion in the second game of the day, Central scored its eight runs on 17 hits while also drawing four walks. Right fielder
Mariah Parton (junior, Ankeny) was 4-4 while also scoring three runs and adding two RBIs. Like the first game Starr and Higgins both had two hits. Starr also scored a run. Shortstop
Haley Bach (senior, Council Bluffs, Lewis Central HS) and left fielder
Emma Jensen (senior, Earlham) both had two hits as well. Bach scored a run and had three RBIs. Jensen added an RBI. Catcher
Rylee Dunkin (sophomore, Hamilton, Twin Ceders HS) reached base safely six times in the two games collecting two hits and drawing four walks.
Pitcher
Jadyn Huisman (freshman, Treynor) earned her fourth win of the season going 5.2 innings and limited the Knights (19-13, 8-4 American Rivers) to two runs on two hits to finish the game.
"[Huisman] was in command of her pitches today," Wares said. "We have been looking for support pitching and Jadyn has been able to give us that. You look at her game today and what she did against Luther she has grown in her last two outings."
The Dutch will hit the road again when they travel to Dubuque to take on Loras College Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
