Simpson tops Central in softball doubleheader

The Dutch left eight runners on base

INDIANOLA— The Central College softball team had its 11-game win streak snapped when Simpson College swept a doubleheader.

The Dutch (17-5, 2-2 American Rivers) lost the opening game 11-3 in five innings followed by an 18-3 loss in game two, which was also five innings.

In the opening game Central jumped out to a 2-1 lead when catcher Rylee Dunkin (sophomore, Hamilton, Twin Ceders HS) scored off of an error and centerfielder Carley Underwood (sophomore, Mitchellville, Colfax-Mingo HS) hit an RBI single scoring left fielder Emma Jensen (senior, Earlham). Central added another run off of an Alexa Anderson (senior, Mount Ayr) RBI single in the top of the third to give the Dutch a 3-2 lead, but that would be the end of the scoring for Central.

Simpson (25-3, 6-2 American Rivers) which leads the American Rivers Conference in batting average with a .374 average and in homeruns with 39, would finish game one with nine unanswered runs.

In the second game, Simpson jumped out to an early three run lead, but in the third inning Anderson hit a three-RBI single. The tie lasted until the fourth inning when Simpson showed its offensive power exploding for 15 runs in the inning.

The Dutch had chances to score leaving eight runners on base across the two games. They had five hits and drew four walks in game one before being held to only two hits and four walks in game two.

"It was uncharacteristic for us to play the way we did," said coach George Wares. "We had multiple opportunities to score runs early in the games, but we were unable to get a hit. We also made some really critical errors to allow big innings."

The Dutch will continue its busy A-R-C slate this week when they travel to Cedar Rapids Wednesday for a doubleheader against Coe College starting at 2 p.m.

"I want to see how our team responds," Wares. "We have two games against Coe and two against Luther, but we need to get back to how we want to play."
