Central men’s tennis team earns shutout victory against Cornell

The Dutch won all of the singles matches

PELLA— The Central College men's tennis team took down Cornell College 7-0 and won all but one match.

In doubles, Alex Slaymaker (sophomore, Geneseo, Ill.) and Travis Subbert (sophomore, McKinney, Texas, West HS) won 6-0 at No. 2 doubles, and the freshmen duo of Jack Briggs (Pella) and Benny Ramker (Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) won 6-2 at No. 3 doubles to clinch the point.

"It was the best our No. 2 doubles has looked so far," said coach Ryun Ferrell. "They are starting to come together. Briggs and Ramker played the way they want to and looked good doing it."

The singles matches were a clean sweep with Ayden Fletcher (senior, Waukee) earning a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, and AJ Wilkins (senior, Grinnell) had a tough three set win at No. 2 singles. After losing the first set 6-4, he responded well, taking the second set 6-2 and winning the tiebreak 10-5.

"It was a tough matchup for Wilkins, but he was able to settle down and take care of business," Ferrell said. "It was a good match overall for him."

Briggs earned his second win of the day at No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 win and Ernest Alvarez Chedzoy (sophomore, Kerrville, Texas, Tivy HS) was victorious at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-3.

Subbert and Slaymaker both took care of business with Subbert winning 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Slaymaker shut out his opponent at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-0.

The squad will return to the court when it travels to Orlando, Florida for spring break to play five matches. The first match is against Calvin College (Mich.) March 11 at 11:30 a.m. EST.

"We are going to play five matches in three days down there against some good competition, but it will be fun," Ferrell said.
