Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Buena Vista downs the Dutch in women’s basketball

The Dutch collected 11 steals

STORM LAKE— An 18-0 run in the third quarter from Buena Vista University was enough to give the Beavers a 72-64 win over Central College women's basketball team.

"We have to have more urgency early in the game," said coach Justin Weiland. "Our energy was better in the second half, but we need to play cleaner on the offensive side of the ball. We had a lot of unforced turnovers which set us back."

The game was tied after the first quarter and Buena Vista (7-13, 2-9 American Rivers) took a 33-29 lead going into halftime, but once the Dutch tied it early in the third quarter the run happened. The Dutch tried to make a fourth quarter comeback but came up short. In that comeback Jasmyn Williams (junior, Denver Colo., Arvada West HS) had all seven of her points.

"She played exactly how we want her to play," Weiland said. "She stepped up late by pushing the ball and attacking the rim."

Central (11-10, 4-8 American Rivers) shot 37.9% from the field and 30.8% from three-point range compared to the Beavers which shot 42.9% from the field and 6-of-16 from three. Buena Vista got a chunk of their points in the paint outscoring Central 40-23.

Offensive rebounding was another key with the Beavers collecting 14 offensive rebounds which resulted in 21 second chance points.

The Dutch were led in scoring by Abby Johnson (senior, Ankeny) with 11 points while also adding two steals.

Emily Naughton (sophomore, Indianola) scored nine points while also dishing out four assists. Samantha Scott (senior, Davenport, North Scott HS) also had nine points on 3-of-6 shooting from three. CeCe Moore (sophomore, Waterloo, West HS) added eight points, and nine rebounds and Hannah Dau (senior, Paullina, South O'Brien HS) also scored eight points while adding two steals.

The Dutch will look to end its losing streak when they travel to Dubuque to take on Loras College Saturday at 2 p.m.
