Central women’s basketball team falls to Coe in A-R-C semifinals

The Dutch finish season 15-12

CEDAR RAPIDS— The Central College women's basketball team fell on the road to No. 2 ranked Coe College 73-65 Thursday night.

Coe got off to a hot start leading 23-18 after the first quarter in which it shot 9-of-15 from the field and 4-of seven from three. The Dutch won the second quarter and trailed 37-33 at halftime.

In the third quarter the Kohawks were once again steaming hot from the field shooting 55% and 3-of-4 from three, before the Dutch went on a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter and cut the lead to four, but Coe held on to win.

For the game, the Kohawks (20-6, 11-5 American Rivers) shot 48.1% from the field and 10-20 from three-point range compared to Central (15-12, 7-9 American Rivers) which shot 40.7% from the field and 40% from three.

"The game didn't go the way we wanted it to, but we have nothing to hang our heads about," said coach Justin Weiland. "It was a great season by our women, completing our season goals, but we didn't want it to end."

The Dutch were led in scoring by Hannah Dau (senior, Paullina, South O'Brien HS) with 11 points. She added four rebounds and three assists. Abby Johnson (senior, Ankeny) also reached double figures with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting.

"Dau and Johnson both hit some big shots during our fourth quarter comeback," Weiland said. "Coe did a great job of limiting Johnsons chances and not allowing her to get clean looks."

Central had 22 bench points led by Bailey Reding (junior, Grundy Center) with 10 points. Also, off the bench, Samantha Scott (senior, Davenport, North Scott HS) scored seven points and led the team with four assists.

Central was 15-18 including 11-for-12 in the second half. It also collected 12 offensive rebounds, being led by CeCe Moore (sophomore, Waterloo, West HS) with five. Moore also scored six points, had seven total rebounds and dished out three assists. Gabby Moore (senior, Waterloo, West HS) scored seven points and collected four rebounds.

With this loss the season comes to an end and even though the team will graduate four impactful seniors, the program is excited to build off this season.

"Our seniors have left their mark on this program," said Weiland. "What they have gone through in the time here, adapting to new systems and coaches, I am so proud of what they have accomplished. We are going to miss them, but we are excited for the returning players to sustain what we have built and continue to improve the program."
