PELLA—Central College cornerback Gavin Smith (junior, Audubon) was tabbed for the Division III Academic All-America® football team as selected by College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA).
           
Smith was a first-team selection.
           
It's the eighth time in the past nine years that the Dutch football team has had a player chosen. Central has now had athletes receive CSC Academic All-America® recognition 81 times, including 22 times in football.
           
Smith is an accounting major with a 3.92 cumulative grade point average. To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity contributor, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or better and have reached sophomore standing.

On the field, Smith was named a second team All-American by the Associated Press this fall. He a trio of interceptions, including a 35-yard interception return touchdown against Simpson College. He also led the team with 11 pass breakups and made 27 tackles.

Additionally, he was a third team D3football.com All-Region pick and first team American Rivers All-Conference choice.
