PELLA— The Central College women's tennis team showed a lot of grit in their American Rivers match against Luther College.
Despite the Dutch (3-2, 1-1) losing 7-0 most of the matches were close against one of the best teams in the conference.
"We competed really well," said coach
Ryun Ferrell. "We had chances to win all three doubles matches but we looked better than we did on Tuesday. Our goal today was to make life difficult for them, which we did, we just couldn't pull through."
An example was
Madi Whalen (junior, Kansas City, Mo., Park Hill) who lost 7-5 in doubles and got to a tie break in the opening set at No. 1 singles which she ended up losing 7-2.
"Whalen battled well." Ferrell said. It was one of her best matches and I am excited to see how she plays in the future."
Meanwhile the Dutch took another squad to Decatur, Illinois to participate in the Dorothy McClure Tournament. The squad defeated Millikin (Ill.) 5-2 but lost to Greenville (Ill.) 2-5 to claim second in the tournament.
In the win against Millikin the Dutch got a default win at No.3 doubles as well as a win from
Jayden Kissack (junior, Clinton) and
Kalina Schubert (Senior, Newell, Newell-Fonda) at No. 2 doubles to clinch the doubles point. Schubert and
Taylor Wyeth (5th-year, Aurora, Ill., West Aurora) were the winners in singles for the Dutch.
"It was a solid day for us, and I am excited to see how we play against Simpson." Ferrell said.
The squad plays next in another A-R-C showdown when they travel to Indianola and take on Simpson Saturday noon.
