MADISON, WIS.— After a scoreless first half, there was a combined for five goals in the second half as the Central College women's soccer team lost to Edgewood College (Wis.) 3-2.
Despite only finding the back of the net twice, the Dutch (3-2) out-shot the Eagles (3-0-1) 26-11 with 15 shots for Central on target.
The team got on the board early in the second half in the 49th minute when midfielder
Kylie Bloomstrom (freshman, Forest Lake, Minn., Forest Lake Area) found forward
Grace Coates (senior, Marion) who opened the scoring with her third goal of the season.
"Credit to Edgewood for finding a way to win and finishing their chances," Coach
Mike Kobylinski said. "Statistically we did more than enough to win, but statistics don't win games."
The Dutch then gave up three unanswered goals before closing the scoring with a late goal in the 82nd minute when the team took advantage of a corner kick and midfielder
Amber Santana (senior, Indio, Calif., Shadow Hills) scored her first goal of the season with
Abby Frey (5th-year, Mesa, Ariz., Desert Ridge) and
Olivia DeVos (freshman, Altoona, Southeast Polk) grabbing the assists.
"Hopefully we can be better as a unit from this experience and bring more energy Saturday," said Kobylinski. "We had more fight after coming back in the second half, and we were all over them but couldn't do enough to draw level."
The squad returns to the pitch Saturday when it hosts Hamline (Minn.) at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex soccer field.
