INDIANOLA — A clean sweep of the doubles matches started some momentum for the Central College women's tennis team in a 7-2 win at Simpson College Sunday.
Central (9-9) won its third consecutive match, a first for this year's team.
"The Dutch looked pretty tough today," coach
Ryun Ferrell said.
Central's practice time has had an emphasis towards doubles and it proved effective with three wins Saturday, highlighted by an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles from
Jennifer Larson (junior, Johnston) and Madi Whalen (sophomore, Kansas City, Mo., Park Hill HS).
"The thing I want to take away most from today is the doubles," Ferrell said. "We looked pretty good in doubles and that's what we've been harping on the most. If we can get doubles, we're pretty formidable."
Emma Murphy (freshman, Liberty, Mo.) and
Lauren Gano (freshman, Johnston) won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles while
Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney (sophomore, Misawa, Japan, Robert D. Edgren HS) and
Becca Vala (junior, Omaha, Neb., Elkhorn HS) won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.
"Our depth is so great that we are able to do a lot of damage to a lot of teams," Ferrell said.
Mahoney won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, Vala won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4, Murphy won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 and Gano won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
The final regular season contest for the Dutch is set for Friday at Augustana College (Ill.) at 4:30 p.m.
