Dutch men take wrestling dual with Augustana

Central victorious after long layoff

INDIANOLA  — Shaking some rust off, the Central College men's wrestling team won a neutral-site dual with Augustana College (Ill.) 26-18 Thursday night.

The Dutch (2-1) had been out of competition for 15 days following a November 20 dual. It was the 10th straight dual win in the series against the Vikings (3-2).

"It was a good opportunity coming off of Thanksgiving break to see where we are at," coach Landon Williams said. "There were some good things we saw and some things we identified we can learn from. Those situations are going to happen throughout the year and I'd rather it happens on December 5 to give us time to make adjustments and learn from."

Kevin Hogan (junior, Peotone, Ill.) provided a boost in the middle of the lineup. In his first collegiate dual appearance, Hogan won an 18-11 decision at 165 pounds.

"He made the most of his opportunity," Williams said. "He was kind of in a hole early, but he kept chipping away. He found himself in a position in the third period where he could get to his stuff and started feeling confident."

Austin Roos (senior, Atkins, Benton HS) put the match away for good with a 13-6 decision at 197 pounds.

"Roos had a hard-fought match," Williams said. "He also kept chipping away and then blew his opponent off his feet."

Central had a pair of wins by fall at 141 pounds from Pierre Baldwin (junior, Carol Stream, Ill., West Chicago HS) and 184 pounds by Sam West (junior, Burlington, Notre Dame HS). Carter West (freshman, Burlington, Notre Dame HS) also recorded an 18-3 technical fall at 133 pounds.

"We're looking to get bonus-point victories," Williams said. "When you're able to not just focus on winning but able to work on scoring points and spreading out the margins that's when good things happen."

Central finishes out the first semester by travelling to Lincoln, Nebraska for the Prairie Wolf Duals on Saturday, December 14. The Dutch will dual against the Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.), Westminster College (Mo.) and Schreiner University (Texas).
