Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

The Central women’s soccer team dominates the Beavers

Abby Frey and Josie Newton both collect two goals and one assist

STORM LAKE— Forwards Josie Newton (sophomore, Pleasant Hill, Southeast Polk HS) and Abby Frey (5th-year, Mesa, Ariz., Desert Ridge HS) both collected two goals and an assist in an offensive swarm.

The Central College women's soccer team defeated Buena Vista University 4-0.

The Dutch (8-5, 1-2 American Rivers) outshot Buena Vista 36-0 with 20 shots on goal. Newton led the squad with five shots on goal, and there were five other teammates who had multiple shots on goal. The team also collected 11 corner kicks and had possession of the ball for 65 percent of the game.

"It was pleasing to see a shutout, our sixth of the season," said coach Mike Kobylinski. "To not allow a shot on goal says something about our defense, like scoring four goals says something about our offense. We had some special performances from some players off the bench who willed us to victory."

Central got on the board when Newton scored her second goal of the season in the 34th minute. Frey and Kylie Bloomstrom (freshman, Forest Lake, Minn., Forest Lake Area HS) picked up the assists on the opening goal.

The scoring continued in the first half when Frey scored her third goal of the season on an assist from Nicole Sinclair (junior, Arvada, Colo., Jefferson Academy) in the 40th minute. Frey also opened the scoring in the second half when she found the back of the net in the 52nd minute on an assist from Newton.

"When we evaluated at half, we felt we started to play our tempo," Kobylinski said. "As the half went on, we found the open players out wide."

Newton closed the scoring when she scored an unassisted goal in the 56th minute.

"It was nice to rotate players in and get our first conference win," Kobylinski said. "After a grueling week of playing tough regional competition, it was great to get our eighth win of the season."

The Dutch have the weekend off and return to the pitch Tuesday when they host Luther College on the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex soccer field at 1 p.m.
