Central men’s soccer team scores late to snag win

Joe Brown scores the only goal of the match

STORM LAKE— In the 87th minute off a corner kick, Joe Brown (senior, Norwalk) finds the back of the net to give the Central College men's soccer team a 1-0 win against Buena Vista University.

This was Brown's second goal of the season and Alejo Marcon (junior, Resistencia, Argentina, Pella Christian HS) recorded the assist.

The Dutch (5-4-2, 2-0-1 American Rivers) outshot Buena Vista 12-6 and had the edge in shots on goal 6-3.

"It was a difficult match," said coach Garry Laidlaw. "Buena Vista has made great progress as a program and they played their part to make it a competitive match on its home pitch."

Goalkeeper Ronan Murphy (senior, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS) saved all three shots he faced including a save on a penalty pick in the 62nd minute. This was Murphy's third clean sheet of the season.

"I thought our young team showed character tonight, but we needed a couple of veterans to get us over the line and Brown and Murphy stepped up," Laidlaw said. "Ian Gredell (freshman, West Des Moines, Dowling Catholic) continued his strong play, and we were once again pleased with our defensive play in general."

The Dutch were shorthanded missing Jack Hillis (sophomore, Clive, Waukee HS) but Nathan Scholl (freshman, Grimes, Dallas Center Grimes HS) filled the void.

"Scholl stepped in and played some great minutes when we needed it," said Laidlaw.

The squad plays its final non-conference match when it hosts the University of Wisconsin-Stout on the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex soccer field at 4 p.m.
