Central streaks past BV for women's basketball win

Dutch get 14 from Mumm, Dau in runaway

PELLA—Twelve players scored and the entire squad saw action as the Central College women's basketball team glided past Buena Vista University 75-38 Wednesday.

Freshman forward Kaitlyn Mumm (Des Moines, Des Moines Christian HS) and guard Hannah Dau (junior, Paullina, South O'Brien HS) each had 14 points while guard Abby Johnson (junior, Ankeny) added 12 as no Dutch player was on the floor for more than 20 minutes.

"It's great when you can get everybody in and out of the 16 that played, 12 scored," coach Justin Weiland said. "That's always nice."

Central (10-11 overall, 4-8 American Rivers) led wire-to-wire, taking an 18-6 lead and continued building on it throughout the night.

"Right from the tip-off, we had great energy, we locked in and jumped on them early," Weiland said. "It's really easy to lay off the gas and not stay locked in throughout the game but I thought we were very disciplined on both ends of the floor tonight."

Central shot only 38.8% from the field but limited Buena Vista (2-16 overall, 1-10 conference) to 29.1% and again controlled the glass, 50-33. Center Allison Van Gorp (junior, Pella, Pella Christian HS), center CeCe Moore (freshman, Waterloo, West HS) and guard Kassidi Steel (senior, New Sharon, North Mahaska HS) each had seven rebounds. Moore also blocked three shots.

"I challenged the players on offense tonight," Weiland said. "I said I need 15 offensive boards and 15 assists and for us to get 15 offensive boards and 18 assists is perfect. And then to follow it up with only having eight turnovers just goes to show how well we took care of the ball tonight.

"And then on the defensive end, I wanted to hold them under 55 and we held them under 40. It was just a great team win all around."

Central is home again Saturday for a conference women's-men's doubleheader with Loras College starting at 2 p.m. at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. Live stats and a video webcast will be available through athletics.central.edu. An audio broadcast will also be offered via KRLS-FM (92.1) with Tyler Crabb calling the action. The broadcast can also be accessed through kniakrls.com.

Loras is ranked No. 19 by D3hoops.com and No. 15 by the WBCA. The Duhawks are 16-3 overall and 8-2 in the conference after sustaining a 59-57 overtime loss at first-place Wartburg College, ranked No. 11 by D3hoops.com and No. 10 by the WBCA. Loras toppled Central 78-62 Jan. 6 at Dubuque.
