OSKALOOSA — Three bonus-point victories in the final four bouts pushed the Central College men's wrestling team to a 34-11 road win at Willim Penn University Tuesday night.
A pair of Statesmen (4-11) victories narrowed Central's (11-3) lead to 16-11 with four matches remaining. The heaviest part of Central's lineup rattled off four straight wins worth 18 points to put the match away.
"We closed really well with the upper weights," coach
Eric Van Kley said. "They were attacking and were able to get us some bonus points."
The run started with a 17-3 major decision win by 174-pounder
Austin Roos (junior, Atkins, Benton HS). Sam West (sophomore, Burlington, Notre Dame HS) followed with an 18-3 technical fall just 4 minutes and 19 seconds into his match.
"They've both really turned the corner the last couple of weeks," Van Kley said. "They really got to their offense strong tonight."
Gage Linahon (senior, 197 pounds, Newton) added a fall in 6:33 and
Hayden Hearne (sophomore, 285 pounds, Urbandale) closed with a 7-2 decision.
"Hayden is wrestling outstanding the last couple of weeks," Van Kley said.
Earlier in the night
Colin Suyko (senior, 125 pounds, Cary, Cary-Grove HS) started the match with a fall in 4:03.
"That was huge for Colin to get us started with a pin," Van Kley said. "He stepped into a role he hasn't been in most of the season and gave us that first win."
Cael Cox (junior, Ankeny) had a 19-6 major decision at 149 pounds and
Pierre Baldwin (sophomore, Carol Stream, West Chicago HS) won by forfeit at 141 pounds.
Central hosts Luther College in an American Rivers Conference dual on Thursday at 6 p.m. in P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.
"We're excited," Van Kley said. "It should be a fun one and we need to be ready to go."
