DUBUQUE — Both teams won five bouts but the Loras College men's wrestling team had the advantage in bonus points for a 22-17 win over Central College Thursday night.
The Duhawks improved to 6-5 overall and 1-0 in the American Rivers Conference. The Dutch fell to 8-2 and 1-2 in the league.
"We had opportunities to get some bonus-point wins and we didn't," coach
Eric Van Kley said. "And then we gave way too many away. Our effort was decent but we have to understand the urgency of scoring points."
Central got off to a 9-0 lead after winning by decision in the first three bouts.
David Vukobratovich (sophomore, 125 pounds, Homer Glen, Ill., Lockport Township HS), won 13-8 at 125 pounds,
Brock Beck (senior, Grinnell) won 9-7 at 133 pounds and
Pierre Baldwin (sophomore, Carol Stream, Ill., West Chicago HS) won 10-4 at 141 pounds.
"David is coming up big in big matches in his first year with varsity," Van Kley said. "He fought off his back for 45 seconds and still came back to have a fairly dominant win. Brock also got down early and really clawed his way back."
Loras won the next four, including two pins and a major decision.
Sam West (sophomore, Burlington, Notre Dame HS) and
Gage Linahon (senior, Newton) rallied for major decisions at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively.
"Those guys gave us a good finish," Van Kley said.
The next competition for Central is the American Rivers Conference duals next Saturday in Waverly. The Dutch dual with Buena Vista University, University of Dubuque and Wartburg College starting at 10 a.m.
"We've got to get bonus points and attack more," Van Kley said. "We need a sense of urgency, even in the bouts that we are done.
