Offensive explosion propels Central to men’s soccer win

Dutch break out of slump in impressive fashion

EUREKA, ILLINOIS— A resurgent offensive attack from the Central College men's soccer team netted seven goals in a 7-0 win at Eureka College Thursday afternoon.

The Dutch moved to 4-3-2 on the season and ended a three-match losing streak. Central had scored just two goals in the previous four matches.

"We are pleased with the result today," coach Garry Laidlaw said. "Getting the first goal helped and I was really pleased to see a better end product with our finishing."

It was Nolan Piedimonte (freshman, Lee's Summit, Mo., North HS) who scored the opening goal just 2:51 into the contest, taking an assist from Coleman Manuel (junior, Erie, Colo.). Piedimonte recorded a brace with a penalty kick in the second half.

Gabe Wilson (senior, Altoona, Southeast Polk HS) also had a penalty kick for his first goal with the Dutch. He was one of three Dutch players to score their first collegiate goal after Evan Hackett (junior, Tempe, Ariz., Tempe Preparatory Academy) and Carter Newhouse (freshman, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS) scored in the second half.

"I'm delighted for Gabe to score his first collegiate goal after everything he's given to the program," Laidlaw said. "We're also happy to see Evan and Carter open their accounts."

Derek Beiner (sophomore, Newton) assisted Newhouse and Austin DeVilder (freshman, Moline, Ill., United Township HS) assisted Hackett. Lay Doe Htoo (freshman, Des Moines, North HS) and Spencer Taylor (sophomore, Norwalk) rounded out the scoring with Alejo Marcon (sophomore, Resistencia, Argentina, Pella Christian HS) assisting both.

Goalkeeper Ronan Murphy (junior, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS) made two saves while recording his second shutout.

Central was coming off a 3-0 loss Tuesday against Cornell but Laidlaw saw something in his team that made him hopeful.

"Despite the result of the last match, I think we started to see and find the version of our team we've been trying to become and I think it carried into today's match," he said.

Central used 25 different players in the win, 23 of them playing at least 20 minutes.

"Rotating the squad has been important for us this week with the extra fixtures and an eye on the next conference match," Laidlaw said. "It will be nice to return home for this next one."

Central returns to conference play Saturday as the University of Dubuque for a 4 p.m. match.
