Central wins a pair of five-set volleyball matches

Dutch up to 12 wins on season

WINONA, MINNESOTA — After getting 2-0 leads in both of its matches Saturday, the Central College volleyball team held on to win 3-2 twice at a triangular hosted by Saint Mary's University.

In its opener against Concordia College – Moorhead (Minn.) Central won 25-22, 25-18, 20-25, 24-26, 15-12). Against Saint Mary's, the Dutch were victorious 26-24, 26-23, 26-28, 15-25, 15-7).

"We didn't play our cleanest ball in either match and we lacked a sense of urgency," coach Jeanne Czipri said. "We still found a way to finish off the wins and that's something we haven't always been able to do in years past."

Emma Wagler (junior, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS) led the team with 15 kills against Concordia. Against Saint Mary's, Gracie Daniels (senior, right-side hitter, Broken Arrow, Okla.) had 14 to pace the squad. Avery Rexroat (sophomore, Macomb, Ill.) had double-doubles against both teams, with 43 assists and 14 digs against Concordia and 36 assists and 11 digs against Saint Mary's.

"Our offense had some really great moments and some moments of predictability," Czipri said.

Wagler is in on four blocks against both teams. Elyse Johnson (senior, middle hitter, Kirksville, Mo.) had three service aces against Saint Mary's.
`
The Dutch head to Galesburg, Illinois Wednesday for a 6 p.m. match against Knox College.

"We have some things to fine tune before we start the gauntlet of our conference, but we're happy that we found a way tonight," Czipri said.
