SAINT PETER, MINNESOTA — Stepping out of American Rivers Conference action for the weekend, the Central College baseball team was swept at Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) on Saturday.
The Dutch (11-16) lost the opener 13-6 against the Gusties (15-9) before falling 10-0 in a seven-inning nightcap.
"You have to give Gustavus credit," coach Casey Klunder said. "They are very talented offensively."
Freshman Max Steinlage (Cedar Falls) got the start in center field in both games and had a two RBI single in the second inning of the opener.
"Max is getting better and better," Klunder said. "He's a hard worker and his bat has really improved since he got here in the fall. We went to work and it's been fun to watch him improve."
Second baseman Colton Jones had two hits in game one including an RBI single. Right fielder Colton DeRocher (junior, Sioux City, East HS and third baseman Declan O'Hare (senior, Los Angeles, Calif., John Marshall HS) each had solo home runs as well.
Chance Dreyer (freshman, Davenport, Assumption HS) was the losing pitcher in game one, allowing five earned runs in three innings of work. O'Hare took the loss as the starter in game two, giving up two earned and three unearned runs in his only inning of work. Central used a total of five relievers to close out the games.
"We were able to get a lot of guys on the mound today," Klunder said. "We also got a lot of positions players in the game as substitutes as well."
Central returns home Tuesday for a 3 p.m. game against Buena Vista University. It's the finale of a three-game series against the Beavers that started with a Buena Vista sweep in Storm Lake on April 4.
"We're going to need to click in all phases," Klunder said. "We've flashed some good things in each of the phases but we need to put it together for the stretch run."
