Central shuts out Cornell women’s tennis team

Dutch deliver first shutout of the spring

PELLA — Putting together its most dominant performance of the spring, the Central College women's tennis team barreled its way to a 9-0 win over Cornell College Saturday afternoon.

Central (6-10) was 1-3 on the spring prior to Saturdays' win over the Rams (9-10).

"This team is sneaky tough," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "We're starting to really figure some things out this spring as we get ready for the conference tournament."

The top of Central's lineup was strong in the victory. Jennifer Larson (sophomore, Johnston) was a 7-5, 6-4 winner at No. 1 singles while Madi Whalen (freshman, Kansas City, Mo., Park Hill HS) won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 The duo took the No. 1 doubles win 8-5.

"Our No. 1 doubles team is looking great," Ferrell said. "They are playing levels better than they ever did in the fall. That goes with experience and the comfort level of playing together.

"Jen is getting so much more confident. Madi is a similar story. They are getting more belief in themselves."

Jenna Hernandez (junior, Slater, Ballard HS) won in a tie-breaking set 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 at No. 3 singles. Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney (freshman, Misawa, Japan, Robert D. Edgren HS) won 6-1, 6-3 at No.4.
