PELLA — With the regular season winding down, the Central College women's tennis team dropped its final home match of the season Wednesday night against Truman State University 8-1.
The Dutch (6-11) fell to the NCAA Division II Bulldogs (11-9) for the second time this season, having fell by the same score on September 28.
Central's point came from the No. 6 singles double match as
Becca Vala (sophomore, Omaha, Neb., Elkhorn HS) had a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
"She's an absolute stud, she's so tough," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "What else can you say, she gets the job done."
The Dutch had two other singles matches go into the super breaker.
Madi Whalen (freshman, Kansas City, Mo., Park Hill HS) fell 6-0, 7-6, 11-9 at No. 2 and
Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney (freshman, Misawa, Japan, Robert D. Edgren HS) lost 7-6, 5-7, 16-14 at No. 4
"Madi had chances," Ferrell said. "She just came up a little short in that super breaker. Jenna had a match point or two as well."
Ferrell was happy with what he saw from his team.
"We had chances all over the place against a team that we've never really had much success against," Ferrell said. "The thing I keep seeing is how we've progressed from one stage to another in preparation for the conference tournament."
Central has one final non-conference match at Augustana College (Ill.) on Saturday at noon before an American Rivers Conference quarterfinal Tuesday at Nebraska Wesleyan University.
"Augustana is another good team," Ferrell said. "They are well coached and I know it will be a tough one but we are ready to go."
