ST. LOUIS, MO. — A school record fell and three other top-10 marks were recorded by the Central College track and field team at the Washington University Distance Carnival Saturday.
No team scores were kept at the meet.
Between the cross country, indoor and now outdoor track and field seasons,
Caroline McMartin (senior, Pella) set her sixth school record of the year in the women's 5,000-meter run. Her time of 16 minutes, 50.17 seconds was good for sixth in the competition and is 26 seconds better than the previous school record.
"She put together a great race," associate head coach
Joe Dunham said. "There was a pack that went out in front of her and she was out in no man's land for awhile with the lead pack in front of her and the chase pack behind her. Goal was to be in race where she can chase people and run on their shoulder and that didn't really happen for her but she stayed tough and on pace with what we were hoping to do."
In the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase,
Megan Johnson (junior, Parkersburg, Apington-Parkersburg HS) crossed the line in 10:51.99 to place fourth and move up to No. 2 in program history.
"That was a huge PR for her," Dunham said. "She actually fell on the third to last water jump and that really took her out of rhythm so I think she could have run even faster. She'll build off this moving forward."
The men's 1,500-meter run featured
Adam Sylvia (senior, Rochester, Mass., Old Rochester HS) running the program's fourth-best mark ever in 3:52.15 to finish fourth.
"We knew coming in he was sharp and ready to run fast.," Dunham said. "He's going to need to run faster than that to get into the national meet in May. He was in position to run about 3:50 but he locked up in the last 150 meters."
Hailey Hill (senior, Las Vegas, Nevada., West Career & Technical Academy) ran the women's 10,000-meter race in 37:41.30, moving up to No. 5 in program history. She placed 17th in the event.
"She ran really smart and within herself," Dunham said. "Our goal was to run 91-second laps and it was a little faster than we were planning on but she was able to hold her pace the whole race. It was an incredible start for her."
In the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase,
Caleb Silver (senior, Conrad, BCLUW HS) was 15th in 9:35.06 and
Cutler Owens (fifth year, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) was 20th in 9:55.02.
Noah Jorgenson (junior, Sidney) was 22nd in the men's 5,000-meter run in a time of 14:57.14
"It was a good first meet for Cutler and Caleb," Dunham said. "We know they are going to improve as they go. They felt confident there is a lot more there. Noah is right at where he was last year which is great coming off an injury-plagued indoor season."
The rest of Central's team is at the Wartburg Outdoor Select in Waverly on Sunday, starting at 11 a.m.
