Dutch men split home tennis matches

Central defeats Cornell and loses to Luther

PELLA — The Central College men's tennis team rolled past Cornell College 7-2 Saturday afternoon in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader.

The Dutch (6-8, 1-1 conference) lost an American Rivers Conference match 8-1 to Luther College (10-6, 2-0 conference) earlier in the day.
           
"We played really well against Luther," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "We were in every match, they were just a little better than we were today. They were picked to finish first in the conference for a reason. We bounced back to take care of business against Cornell."
           
Matthew Den Adel (senior, Ankeny, Centennial HS) was 2-0 in singles after earning Central's only point against Luther with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles. He also won 6-0, 6-1 against Cornell in the spot.
           
"He's playing some great tennis right now," Ferrell said. "I couldn't be more proud of him.
           
Den Adel and Trey Melvin (senior, Lawrence, Kan., Free State HS) were 8-1 winners at No. 2 doubles against the Rams. Alejo Marcon (freshman, Knoxville, Pella Christian HS) and AJ Wilkins (sophomore, Grinnell) also gave Central an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
           
The Dutch took five of the six singles matches, highlighted by a 6-0, 6-0 whitewashing at No. 2 by Nick Scott (junior, Fort Benton, Mont., Great Falls Central Catholic HS) and. Wilkins won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3, Caleb Hamerlinck (senior, Huxley, Ballard HS) won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 and Ayden Fletcher (sophomore, Waukee) won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5.
           
The Dutch host Simpson College on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. dual. Central has defeated the Storm 47 consecutive times dating back to 1992.
