Dutch blanked in baseball series finale at Coe

Central held scoreless for first time this season

CEDAR RAPIDS — The offense was hard to come by for the Central College baseball team in a 12-0 loss at Coe College Saturday afternoon.

The Dutch (7-7, 1-2 American Rivers Conference) were outhit by the Kohawks (10-5, 2-1 conference) 14-3, including four doubles for Coe.

"Coe really got after us offensively," coach Casey Klunder said. "You have to give them credit for how well they played."

Central was sat down in order in six of the seven innings. In the fifth inning, designated hitter Garrett Finley (senior, DeWitt, Central DeWitt HS) and shortstop Chance Dreyer (freshman, Davenport, Assumption HS) had back-to-back singles. Third baseman Kasey Carter (freshman, Prole, Indianola HS) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. The Dutch were unable to turn the rally into any runs.

"I was really disappointed with our offense," Klunder said. "We needed to string at-bats together better than we did. We just didn't do much right offensively."

Caleb Evans (senior, Davenport, Central HS) took the loss as the starting pitcher, allowing six runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out two over two innings. Sam Staley (senior, Cedar Rapids, Jefferson HS) allowed five runs on six hits in three innings. Kurby Vowels (senior, Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) yielded one unearned error in his lone inning of work.

"Caleb did a nice job of attacking the zone," Klunder said. "Coe just had a bunch of hits and really strung them together. They were hot today."

Central hosts the University of Dubuque on Tuesday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

"I think Dubuque is leading the conference in hitting," Klunder said. "They are a veteran group and will be a tough challenge for us one Tuesday."
