BOSTON, MASS. — Competing in his native Massachusetts, Central College men's track and field senior
Adam Sylvia (senior, Rochester, Mass., Old Rochester HS) spearheaded the four distance runners at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University Saturday.
Sylvia was the 271st runner across the line out of 432 entries in the mile run. He clocked in at 4 minutes, 15.67 seconds.
"Adam took another step in the right direction much like all of our distance runners," Dunham said. "You can see him beginning to sharpen. I'm really pleased with where these guys are at."
Noah Jorgenson (junior, Sidney) finished his mile in 4:33.62 and placed 425th. Jorgenson also ran a 1:53.76 in the 800, placing 104th of 328 entries.
"Noah broke through in the 800 today," Dunham said. "He's behind in his training but he's working like crazy to catch up. His mile showed that tonight a little bit but I believe he just needs a few more weeks."
In the 3,000-meter run,
Cutler Owens (fifth year, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) placed 56th in 8:42.13. Owens moved up to No. 9 in program history.
"Cutler was finally able to get on the top-10 list in the 3K," Dunham said. "I've always believed he could do it and was great to see him finally break through. I believe this could be a good launching point for him as we enter the conference championships in a few weeks."
Caleb Silver (senior, Conrad, BCLUW HS) ended a long day of action by running the 5,000-meter run around midnight local time in Boston. He clocked in at 15:10.74, placing 166th.
"I was proud of his effort tonight," Dunham said. "While it wasn't his night on the track, we've seen what he is capable of and this was a great experience for him. We will see some great things out of Caleb in the coming weeks."
Central is headed back to Waverly next Saturday for the Liz Wuertz Invitational hosted by Wartburg College at 11 a.m.
