Central eliminated from conference volleyball tournament

Dutch struggle to find rhythm

INDIANOLA—Falling in its quarterfinal match at Simpson College, the Central College volleyball team was bounced from the American Rivers Conference tournament Tuesday night.

The No. 5 Dutch fell 25-19, 25-7, 22-25, 25-20 against the No. 4 Storm (10-20, 4-4 conference). The Dutch finished the season 22-10 overall.

"Tonight's loss hurts," coach Jeanne Czipri said. "We just came out pretty tight and it took us awhile to get our groove."

Middle hitter Elyse Johnson (senior, Kirksville, Mo.) suffered an injury in the first set. She tried to battle through it but was removed for the night during the second set.

"We had to make a few changes after losing Elyse early," Czipri said. "It was just hard to find our rhythm."

Outside hitter Leslie Snow (sophomore, Olivia, Minn., BOLD HS) led the team with 11 kills while outside hitter Gracie Pierson (sophomore, Lake City, Minn.) and middle hitter Emma Wagler (junior, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS) had seven kills apiece.

Setter Avery Rexroat (sophomore, Macomb, Ill.) had 34 set assists and libero Colleen Kenney (sophomore, Taylor Ridge, Illinois, Rock Island Alleman HS) had 33 digs.

Johnson and outside hitter Gracie Daniels (senior, Broken Arrow, Okla.), who had three kills Tuesday, are the only two graduating members of the roster.

"I'm grateful for these two seniors for sticking around," Czipri said. "They went from a freshman season dealing with CoVID restrictions, through rough seasons and lots of changes. They cared a lot for this program and left it with a fighting spirit."
