CEDAR RAPIDS — Unable to get a point in three close doubles matches, the Central College women's tennis team was defeated 7-2 by Coe College Saturday afternoon.
In doubles, Central's (6-5, 4-3 American Rivers Conference) three pairings lost by 8-5, 8-6 and 8-5 margins, respectively. Coach
Ryun Ferrell said each tandem had a chance to win.
"We would go down and then we would come back," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "They couldn't get rid of us for most of those matches."
Sophomore
Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney (sophomore, Misawa, Japan, Robert D. Edgren HS) won her fourth conference singles match of the fall, with a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 4 singles.
"She beat a good player," Ferrell said. "She was down 5-2 in the second set and kept crawling back. Once they got to the tiebreaker, she dominated from then on."
Alli Kreider (senior, Norwalk) also picked up a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.
"She was very focused today and played like a senior," Ferrell said. "She was in control the entire time and we had no doubt she was going to win that."
Central travels to Waverly Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. match against Wartburg College in the final regular season dual. The winner of the match is likely to finish fourth in the American Rivers Conference
