WAVERLY —In the final dual of the fall season, the Central College women's tennis team lost 7-2 at Wartburg College Tuesday night.
Central concludes the fall with a record of 6-6 overall and 4-4 in the American Rivers Conference, finishing in fifth place in the standings. Wartburg edged them for fourth place by finishing 5-3 in the league.
"We looked good in some spots and looked okay in other spots," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "We wanted a win but it didn't go our way. The attitude and effort were both good, we just have some stuff we need to work on. We'll get another chance at Wartburg next spring in the first round of the conference tournament."
Lauren Gano (freshman, Johnston) and
Emma Murphy (freshman, Liberty, Mo.) are now 5-1 together in conference doubles matches after taking an 8-7 decision at No. 2.
"I'm excited about their future," Ferrell said. "They're going to really help us as they get older. They really turned it on at the end tonight and ran away with it."
Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney (sophomore, Misawa, Japan, Robert D. Edgren HS) rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 win at No. 4 singles.
"She got out of her own way and did a great job," Ferrell said. "She was up big in the first set and lost a little focus. She regrouped in the second set and super breaker and did a really great job."
Central will close out its fall season at the American Rivers Conference Individual Championships Friday and Saturday in Cedar Rapids. All 19 players on the Dutch roster are scheduled to play, pending the outcome of poor weather forecasts that would make it difficult to play the entirety of the tournament as scheduled.
"The weather doesn't look good," Ferrell said. "We've got some players that really want to be pushed. We're excited to play and compete and hopefully we'll be able to play some outside."
