Box Score CEDAR RAPIDS — Capping off an 8-0 fall season in singles,
Kalina Schubert (junior, Newell, Newell-Fonda HS) finished atop the C-Flight bracket at the American Rivers Conference Individual Championships Saturday.
Schubert started her Saturday with a 4-2, 3-5, 10-7 win over Tori Johnson of Wartburg College in the semifinal. She downed teammate
Ellie Sackett (freshman, Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) 1-4, 4-2 (10-8) in the title bout. Schubert completed a 5-0 run through the league tournament and finished the fall 8-0.
"She is somebody that gets to a certain level and never drops below that level," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. If you're going to beat her, you're going to have to play above that level. She plays tennis like a middleweight boxer who is going to hit you with some body blows. She never quits."
Sackett won her semifinal match 4-1, 4-0 win over Wartburg's Lily Schreckengast.
"This was a deep bracket this year," Ferrell said. "With our league getting deeper and rules about how many players from each school can be in each flight, things can get hard really fast in the C-Flight even. Ellie was zoned in and focused the whole weekend."
Lauren Gano (freshman, Johnston) and
Emma Murphy (freshman, Liberty, Mo.) took runner-up honors in the B-Flight doubles after going 1-1 Saturday. They beat Bailey Sinnwell and Tori Johnson of Wartburg College 6-3 in the semifinal match before suffering a 6-3 defeat against Natalie Neff and Lena Lichau of Luther College in the title match.
"They are so tough in doubles," Ferrell said. "They complement each other well and communicate. They had chances in that final against Luther but came up a little short."
Central will return to action in the spring semester with a home match against William Jewell University (Mo.) at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 2.'
