Errors costly for Central volleyball team in loss

Dutch offense struggles in defeat

PELLA — The Central College volleyball team could not get its offensive attack going as it was swept by Nebraska Wesleyan University 25-15, 25-13, 25-19 Thursday in an American Rivers Conference contest.

Central falls to 18-6 overall and 2-3 in the conference. Nebraska Wesleyan improved to 5-0 in league matches and 16-6 overall. Despite the loss, the Dutch still have more overall wins than any program in the conference.

"We are a good team and we have amazing pieces," coach Jeanne Czipri said. "When it comes to conference matches, I don't know if we see ourselves as worth of winning. That's the biggest challenge we have this year. We must believe and make the mental shift that we can compete in this conference."

The Dutch offense recorded just 25 kills while committing 26 errors on 105 swings for a hitting percentage of -.010.

"We struggled to find the court tonight," Czipri said. "We've got to go back to the drawing board and figure that out."

Emma Wagler (junior, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS) had the highest percentage night, putting down four kills on 10 attempts. Leslie Snow (sophomore, Olivia, Minn. BOLD HS) led the team with six kills.

Libero Colleen Kenney (sophomore, Taylor Ridge, Ill., Rock Island Alleman HS) had 17 digs. Setter Avery Rexroat (sophomore, Macomb, Ill.) had 12 assists and two service aces.

The Dutch host Beloit College and the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse Saturday in P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium for a triangular. After opening with Beloit at 3 p.m., Central will have its Senior Night ceremony before the match with Wis. – La Crosse at 7 p.m.
