Central in poisition for multiple top-three finishes

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Central College women's tennis team advanced two doubles pairings and two singles players into Saturday's semifinals at the American Rivers Conference Individual Championships Friday.

Freshmen Lauren Gano (Johnston) and Emma Murphy (Liberty, Mo.) are now 7-1 in doubles matches this fall after winning twice to reach the B-Flight semifinals. They opened with a 6-2 win against Simpson College's Maggie Hall and Savana Walls and followed it up by beating their teammates Ellie Sackett (freshman, Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) and Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney (sophomore, Misawa, Japan, Robert D. Edgren HS) 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

"The future is very bright for those two," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "I can't wait to see what they do in the semifinals."

Nikki Purcell (sophomore, Pella, North Scott HS) and Madison Price (freshman, Ankeny, Centennial HS) needed just one win to reach the C-Flight doubles semifinals with a 6-1 win over Emmily Ramirez and Taylor Fritz of Buena Vista University.

"I was really happy to see them have some success," Ferrell said.

In singles, Sackett and Kalina Schubert (junior, Newell, Newell-Fonda HS) both won a pair of matches to get to the C-Flight singles semifinals. Sackett beat Bailey Sinnwell of Wartburg 4-0, 5-3 and teammate Gano 4-1, 4-1. Schubert beat Simpson College's Maggie Hall 4-0, 4-2 and teammate Abbie Den Adel (junior, Ankeny, Centennial HS) 4-1, 4-0.

"It's exciting to have both of them in a position to earn a medal tomorrow," Ferrell said.

In the A-Flight of singles, seniors Jenna Hernandez (Slater, Ballard HS) and Brianna Lindstrom (North Aurora, Ill., Wes Aurora HS) each won a match while all three doubles teammate lost their only match.
