Dutch falter against ranked opponent

Loras takes down Central

PELLA — A shorthanded Central College wrestling squad fell 38-9 against No. 12 Loras College Thursday night in an American Rivers Conference dual.

The Dutch (4-2, 2-2 conference) were missing their starters at 125 pounds, Rheiner Stahlbaum (sophomore, Johnston) and at 133 pounds, Brock Beck (Grinnell). The Duhawks (11-3, 2-1 conference) took a 10-0 lead at the beginning of the night off those two matches.

"We're a little bit banged up and without a full lineup," coach Eric Van Kley said. "Loras is a good team and I thought out effort was decent. There are just some things we've got to tighten up and improve on."

Central's first win was from Pierre Baldwin (freshman, Carol Stream, Ill., West Chicago HS) at 141 pounds in a 5-1 decision. It's win No. 15 for Baldwin in his first season.

"Pierre is a competitor," Van Kley said. "He loves to put it on the line and compete."

Miles Berg (junior, Indianola) ended the night on a high note with a first period fall at 285 pounds.

"It's always great to finish a night with a pin," Van Kley said. "I couldn't be prouder of the improvement Miles has shown. He went out and attacked and got it tonight."

Central returns to action at the American Rivers Conference duals next Saturday against Buena Vista University, the University of Dubuque and Wartburg College in Storm Lake.
