DECORAH — A pair of tight contests went against the Central College baseball team Saturday afternoon, losing 1-0 and 10-5 against Luther College.
Central closes out the season with a 16-23 mark overall and 4-20 in league games.
"There wasn't a lot of external motivators for a team that was out of the conference tournament," Klunder said "I'm just really proud of the way our team battled a really good program like Luther three times."
Fifth-year senior Marcus Wenzel (Chicago, Ill., Luther North College Prep) took a tough pitching loss in the first game. He allowed just one run in the eighth inning after striking out seven but the Dutch were shut out on the offensive end.
"He was outstanding today," Klunder said. "I wish we could have backed him up with some runs. He ended the year like he wanted to, by pitching his best."
Center fielder Colton DeRocher (sophomore, Sioux City, East HS) went 3-for-3 in the second game and drove in three runs to reach 50 RBI for the season. He's just the third player in program history with 50 RBI in one campaign.
"He never really went on a slump the entire season," Klunder said. "It takes some really good habits to do that. He's had an outstanding season and it was fun to watch him work."
Second baseman Jared Kampf (senior, Peoria, Ariz., Mountain Ridge HS) had two hits in the second game and center fielder Logan McCoy (freshman, Galva, Alta-Aurelia HS) had two in the opener.
Wenzel and Kampf were two of six seniors on the Dutch roster this season and were joined by Lucas Farren (fifth year, Yorkville, Ill.), Ian Boline (Alburnett), Quinn Miller (Cedar Rapids, Xavier HS) and Landon Vander Leest (Pella).
"I can't thank the seniors enough for welcoming me into the Dutch family," Klunder said. "Any success we have in the future will be directly related to the foundation the seniors laid."
