Two more all-conference performances for Dutch men at league track meet

Lewis, Thompson bring Central's all-conference total to 12

DUBUQUE — Adding two more all-conference performances to its weekend total, the Central College men's track and field team finished fourth at the American Rivers Conference Outdoor Championships Saturday.

The Dutch totaled 128.5 points and 12 all-conference performances over three days. The University of Dubuque won the team crown with 194 points.

After winning the long jump on Friday, Brock Lewis (senior, Lathrop, Mo.) came back Saturday with another all-conference performance in the triple jump. He finished second in 45 feet, 10.75 inches, moving up from fourth place on his last attempt.

"He's struggled in the triple jump all year because he hasn't felt 100% healthy," coach Brandon Sturman said. "He gutted it out today and pushed through for the team and earned another all-conference honor."

Kale Purcell (freshman, Holton, Kan.) was fifth in the triple jump (44-7).

After finishing eighth in the decathlon, Nick Thompson (senior, Newhall, Benton HS) became an all-conference javelin thrower by reaching 160-7 and finishing third. Luke Pavlat (senior, Pella) was seventh (155-5) and Reid Pakkebier (freshman, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS) was eighth (155-0)

"The challenge of doing the multis is that sometimes you're events don't shine," Sturman said. "Nick took advantage of his opportunity and earned some big points for us. There's not a better way for him to go out."

Lucas Heitz (junior, Adel, ADM HS) scored points in the 110-meter hurdles and the pole vault. He was fifth in the 110 hurdles (15.14 seconds) and sixth in the pole vault (12-11.75). Connor Miklos (sophomore, Lockport, Ill., Providence Catholic HS) was sixth in the 110 hurdles (15.78 seconds) and Alec Stahl (senior, Steamboat Rock, AGWSR HS) was seventh in the pole vault (12-11.75)

"We knew he had a good shot in hurdles but he stepped up in the pole vault," Sturman said. "He's been pole vaulting well so we took a chance and he came up big for us."

Carter Tryon (senior, Winterset) was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (55.69), Noah Jorgenson (sophomore, Sidney) was sixth in the 800-meter run (1:55.88), Nolan Reynolds (junior, Montezuma) was seventh in the 400-meter run (49.51), Will DeHaan (senior, DeWitt, Central DeWitt HS) was seventh in the 1500-meter run (3:55.700 and Caleb Silver (junior, Conrad, BCLUW HS) was seventh in the 5,000-meter run (15:12.04)

Jaxon Thompson (sophomore, Marion, Linn-Mar HS), Grant Boyse (junior, Wellman, Mid-Prairie HS), Reynolds and Tryon were fourth in the 4x400-meter relay (3:22.58). Brian Hart (freshman, Norwalk), Lewis, Carson Zeitler (freshman, Milton, Davis County HS) and Reynolds were fifth in the 4x100-meter relay (42.89).

The Dutch will compete in last chance meets next week with the official schedule pending individual athletes standings in the qualifying lists. The majority of the Central athletes will likely go to Augustana College's (Ill.) Midwest Twilight Qualifier on Thursday but other options include meets at North Central College (Ill.), St. Olaf College (Minn.) and the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse.
