PELLA — Erasing a 22-year school record in the outdoor long jump,
Brock Lewis (senior, Lathrop, Mo.) spearheaded the Central College men's track and field team at the Central Invitational.
Central won the team title with 280 points. William Penn University was second with 124 points.
Lewis recorded a leap of 24 feet, 3.75 inches in his final competitive jump on Central's track to take the new school record by .25 inches. It was previously set by Chris McCullough in 2000.
"Brock had a really awesome series," coach
Brandon Sturman said. "He started off with a really big jump which was his season-best and then hit his biggest jump on the last attempt for a school record."
Lewis also ran the second leg on the winning 4x100-meter relay team that crossed the line in 42.77 seconds. He was joined on that team by
Brian Hart (freshman, Norwak), JD Elefson freshman, Ankeny, North Polk HS) and
Nolan Reynolds (junior, Mountezuma).
Reynolds and Elefson were the bookends on the winning 4x400-meter relay team (3:25.97), joined by
Grant Boyse (junior, Wellman, Mid-Prairie HS) and
Carter Tryon (senior, Winterset). Reynolds also was third in the 100-meter dash (11.30 seconds) and Tryon was second in the 400-meter hurdles (58.58 seconds).
Sam Beatty (junior, Mount Pleasant) and
Drake Lewis (senior, Lathrop, Mo.) were 1-2 in the men's high jump with Beatty winning after clearing 6-9.5. Lewis got over the bar at 6-6.75.
"It was an unbelievable performance by Sam," Sturman said. "He's been trying to get back into track shape and he found it today."
Nick Thompson (senior, Newhall, Benton HS) had the winning javelin throw at 162-2.
Theo Baldus (senior, St. Ansgar) had runner-up finishes in the discus throw (162-6) and hammer throw (165-1).
Thomas Spoehr (senior, Bennington, Neb.) was second in the shot put (47-0.25).
Lucas Heitz (junior, Adel, ADM HS) won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.13 seconds and
Reid Pakkebier (freshman, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS) was second in 15.26 seconds.
Brody Klein (sophomore, Rainier, Wash.) added a second-place finish in the pole vault (12-5.5).
"Sometimes its harder for those multi guys to do multiple events because they don't get the rests they are used to when they do a decathlon," Sturman said. For them to put up some PRs is really exciting, especially since they weren't getting the proper rest time."
The Dutch took the top-three spots in the 3,00-meter steeplechase as
Thatcher Krob (senior, Lisbon) won it in 9:27.19.
Cutler Owens (senior, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) was second in 9:35.22 and
Caleb Silver (junior, Conrad, BCLUW HS) was third in 9:49.90.
Will DeHaan (senior, DeWitt, Central DeWitt HS) won the 1,500 meters in 3:53.74 with
Noah Jorgenson (sophomore, Sidney) second in 3:58.77.
Jack Sagan (senior, Riverside, Ill., Riverside-Brookfield HS) was second in 1:59.78 and
Kenny Cronin (freshman, Bloomfield, Davis County HS) was third in 3:58.77
Central is slated to attend both the Loras Mid-Week Invitational on Wednesday and the Statesmen Invitational hosted by William Penn University on Friday.
