DES MOINES — A second school record fell for the Central College men's track and field team at the Drake Relays as the shuttle hurdle relay team eclipsed a 29-year old mark Saturday.
Jaxon Thompson (sophomore, Marion, Linn-Mar HS),
Reid Pakkebier (freshman, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS),
Connor Miklos (sophomore, Lockport, Ill. Providence Catholic HS) and
Lucas Heitz (junior, Adel, ADM HS) finished eighth in 1 minute, 2.35 seconds. The previous mark was 1:02.41 set in 1993.
"We thought we could do pretty good," coach
Brandon Sturman said. "We don't get to do the shuttle hurdle often but it's always cool to set a school record."
Krissa Larson (senior, Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS), Karsyn Lamm (freshman, Mount Pleasant), Rayna Sickels (freshman, Indianola) and
Abby Gruver (sophomore, Sully, Lynnville-Sully HS) were in the seventh in the women's shuttle hurdle in 1:07.68.
"The winds were super strong," Sturman said. "They ran good, but it was hard for the two who had to run into the wind."
In the College Division of the women's distance medley relay, Central's quartet of
Megan Johnson (sophomore, Parkersburg, Aplington-Parkersburg HS),
Lauren Brown (sophomore, Underwood),
Alyssa Mayhew (sophomore North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) and
Caroline McMartin (sophomore, Pella) was eighth in 12:46.10.
On the men's side,
Adam Sylvia (junior, Rochester, Mass., Old Rochester, Mass.),
Carter Tryon (senior, Winterset),
Noah Jorgenson (sophomore, Sidney) and
Will DeHaan (senior, DeWitt, Central DeWitt HS) were ninth in 10:24.34 in the distance medley relay.
"We also don't get to run the distance medley relay often outdoors," Sturman said. "It's an opportunity to run at Drake, especially for the Iowa kids who did it in high school."
After a stellar Friday in the long jump,
Brock Lewis (senior, Lathrop, Mo.) only completed one successful triple jump and finished 20th in 44 feet, 8 inches.
"It's the first time he's competed in the triple jump since the indoor season," Sturman said. "He's just trying to get some work in before the outdoor conference meet."
Central competes at the Dr. Tucker Open at Loras College next Friday before competing in the American Rivers Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 13-15.
"We're still battling the weather," Sturman said. "Overall, we've made some strides over the past weekends and we're looking good for conference. We're pretty healthy, so now it's about tapping into our potential."
