Central women take down Cornell tennis team

Dutch wrap up regular season at 12-11

MOUNT VERNON — In its regular season finale, the Central College women's tennis team won in dominant 9-0 fashion at Cornell College Sunday afternoon.

Central finishes the regular season at 12-11. The Dutch had lost the five matches against the Rams dating back to October 2010.

"We looked good in doubles," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "Cornell came out of the blocks good in singles. We weathered the storm and took care of them. We haven't looked this good against them in a long time."

The No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches both went to a third set. Central's Alyssa Lewton (senior, Ankeny, Centennial HS) was 1-6, 6-3, 10-6 winner. Maddie Hartley (senior, Clarinda) was victorious 6-1, 4-6, 15-13 in the No. 2 slot.

"Maddie has a lot of three-setters this year so it was good to see her take care of business," Ferrell said. "Both players had match points throughout and Maddie finally came out on top."

Katie Larson (senior, Fort Madison) won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, Alex Griggs (junior, Knoxville) won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4, Alli Kreider (sophomore, Norwalk) won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 and Ashlynn Brant (junior, Glidden, Carroll HS) won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

All three of Central's teams won 8-2. Lewton and Hartley were at No. 1, Larson and Jennifer Larson (freshman, Johnston) were at No. 2 and Griggs and Jenna Hernandez (sophomore, Slater, Ballard HS) were at No. 3

Central will be the No. 2 seed for the American Rivers Conference tournament April 29-30. The Dutch will play the winner of No. 3 Coe College and No. 6 Wartburg College.

"Whoever we play, we're looking forward to the opportunity to see if we can get to the finals," Ferrell said. It's an exciting time for our team."
