Dutch women bounced in league tennis semifinals

Central ends season at 12-12 overall record

WINONA, MINN. — In the semifinals of the American Rivers Conference postseason tournament, the Central College women's tennis team was defeated 5-1 in the semifinals by Coe College Friday night.

The Dutch close out their season with a 12-12 overall record. The Dutch were 6-2 in American Rivers Conference matches in the fall season, tying for second and earning the the No. 2 seed for the first time in the postseason tournament since 2004.

"We played well," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "Coe is a nice team and they were just a little better than us. We had chances all over the place, we just came up short"

The lineup Central used Friday was very different from the one it used in its fall season. Only three singles player were in the regular fall lineup and all of them were up a spot after Bronwyn Metcalf, the No. 1 player, graduated in December. Only one of the three doubles teams was the same as well.

"This was a completely different team from what we used in the fall," Ferrell said. "For us to do what we did was pretty remarkable. We put together a tough squad"

Katie Larson (senior, Fort Madison) was the only Dutch player to register a win, taking the No. 3 singles match 6-1, 6-4.

"Katie played great," Ferrell said.

The Dutch graduate several seniors but Ferrell is excited about what comes next for the program.

"We could do some great things in the future," Ferrell said.
