PELLA — Seniors on the Central College women's tennis team scored all five points in a 5-4 victory over St. Ambrose University Saturday afternoon.
Central improves to 9-8 on the season and St. Ambrose falls to 2-8.
With the score tied at 4-4, senior
Alex Griggs (Knoxville) was the last player on the court for the Dutch at No. 5 singles. With a 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 victory, Griggs gave Central the team win.
"She played resilient in that match," assistant coach
Trevor Budewitz said. "She lost the first set but shook it off and got back to work for the second. She strung together some clutch points to win the tiebreak."
Griggs also was an 8-3 winner at No. 3 doubles
with Jenna Hernandez (sophomore, Slater, Ballard HS).
"That's a new pairing in our lineup," Budewitz said. "They have an aggressive style and like to play at the net which is a recipe for winning points in doubles."
Seniors
Alyssa Lewton (Ankeny, Centennial HS) and
Maddie Hartley (Clarinda) added an 8-6 win at No. 1 singles.
"They always come to play," Budewitz said. "I was happy to see them build on the success they had in the fall."
Lewton won 7-6 (12-10) 7-5 at No. 1 singles.
Sarah Schirm (Cedar Rapids, Xavier HS) was a 7-6, 2-6, 10-8 winner at No. 4 singles.
"Those two also had great singles wins," Budewitz said. "Those were tough wins for both of them to grind down their opponents."
Central hosts Baker University (Kan.) next Saturday at noon.
