PELLA — With close matches at nearly every spot in the lineup, the Central College women's tennis team earned a 5-4 win over Baker University (Kan.) Saturday afternoon.
Central (10-8 overall) is now 2-1 in the spring semester.
"It was a good win for us," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "We were able to take care of business."
Maddie Hartley (senior, Clarinda) was the only Dutch player to go 2-0 on the day, winning her No. 1 doubles match 8-6 with
Alyssa Lewton (senior, Ankeny, Centennial HS) before winning 6-1, 5-7, 11-9 at No. 2 singles.
The No. 3 doubles team of
Alex Griggs (senior, Knoxville) and
Jenna Hernandez (sophomore, Slater, Ballard HS) winning 8-5 gave the Dutch a 2-1 advantage after doubles.
"We work a lot on doubles in practice so it nice to see that pay off for us by winning two of three," Ferrell said.
Katie Larson (senior, Fort Madison) rallied to win 5-7, 6-4, 10-6 at No. 3 singles
Ashlynn Brant (junior, Glidden, Carroll) closed out the match by winning 6-1, 6-7, 12-10 at No. 6 singles.
Central hosts Truman State University Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m and Northwestern College on Saturday at 11 a.m.
"We'll send them home for a few days of spring break early next week and then bring them back," Ferell said. "We'll see what we can do against those two teams."
