WAVERLY — Winning four events at the Wartburg Select Saturday, the Central College men's track and field team had several athletes improve their standing in the NCAA Division III Indoor performance list
Central was fifth in loaded field with 97 points. The University of Dubuque won with 140.5 points.
Lucas Heitz (junior, Adel, ADM HS) paced the field in the heptathlon with 4,655 points.
Jaxon Thompson (sophomore, Marion, Linn-Mar HS) was second with 4,489 points and
Brody Klein (sophomore, Rainier, Wash.) was third with 4,484 points. Heitz is No. 13 nationally with Thompson and Klein at No. 24 and 25, respectively.
"We're really happy with how they're progressing," coach
Brandon Sturman said. "We're excited about the depth we have there and what the can do in the coming weeks."
Will DeHaan (senior, DeWitt, Central DeWitt HS) and
Noah Jorgenson (sophomore, Sidney) went 1-2 in the 800-meter run. DeHaan's winning time of 1 minute, 53.94 seconds is No. 8 nationally and Jorgenson's 1:54.49 is No. 14.
"When you're running against the teams that we did today, it's even more impressive," Sturman said. "They're making name for themselves nationally as well."
Long jumper
Brock Lewis (senior, Lathrop, Mo.) improved his season-best mark by .01 centimeters and is No. 15 nationally with a leap of 23 feet, 4.5 inches.
"It's not a big PR, but we're making progress towards our goals," Sturman said.
Nolan Reynolds (junior, Montezuma),
Grant Boyse (junior, Wellman, Mid-Prairie HS), Carter Tryon (senior, Winterset) and
JD Elefson (freshman, Ankeny, North Polk HS) were the winning quartet in the 4x400-meter relay, crossing the line in 3:25.54
Theo Baldus (senior, St. Ansgar) was third in the weight throw (51 feet, 11 inches) and
Thomas Spoehr (senior, Bennington, Neb.) was fourth in the shot put (46-10.25).
Connor Miklos (sophomore, Lockport, Ill., Providence Catholic HS) was third in the 60-meter hurdles (8.96) and
Drake Lewis (senior, Lathrop, Mo.) cleared 6-6.75 in the high jump and also placed third.
The majority of the Dutch roster will be in Grinnell for the Darren Young Classic on Saturday. DeHaan and Jorgenson are among the contingent of Central distance runners competing at the David Hemery Valentine University at Boston University Saturday.
