WAVERLY — Eight members of the Central College track and field program competed in the Wartburg Select men's heptathlon and women's pentathlon Friday night.
All five events of the women's pentathlon were completed Friday and Central's
Taryn Hintz (sophomore, Primghar, South O'Brien HS) finished second of seven athletes with 2,865 points.
Krissa Larson (senior, Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) was third with 2,767 points and
Rayna Sickels (freshman, Mount Pleasant) was fourth with 2,583 points.
"Overall, we ran well," associate head coach
Jim Fuller said. "They all three had personal bests in the 800 and two of the three had personal bests in the 60-meter hurdles. The pentathlon is really skewed towards the high jump and that's an area we struggled tonight."
At the halfway point of the men's heptathlon, the Dutch have five of the top eight athletes.
Brody Klein (sophomore, Rainier, Wash.) is third with 2,520 points. He's followed by
Jaxon Thompson (sophomore, Marion, Linn-Mar HS) in fourth with 2,500 points,
Lucas Heitz (junior, Adel, ADM HS) in fifth with 2,490 points,
Reid Pakkebier (freshman, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS) in seventh with 2,404 points and
Nick Thompson (senior, Newhall, Benton HS) in eighth with 2,349 points.
"We sprinted pretty well," Fuller said. "Our marks in the long jump were alright but nobody was able to pop a big one and we had a little trouble getting on the board. In the shot put, we were fine but not great."
The five heptathletes will complete the final three events in the morning at 9 a.m. and the rest of the meet starts at 11 a.m.
"I think we can be better tomorrow on the men's side," Fuller said. "We've worked a on the hurdles, pole vault and the 1,000-meter run so hopefully that shows up tomorrow."
