PELLA — Winning nine matches with bonus points, including five wins by fall, pushed the Central College wrestling team past Nebraska Wesleyan University 48-3 Wednesday night.
The 10th-ranked Dutch move to 2-0 in the American Rivers Conference and 3-0 overall. Nebraska Wesleyan is 0-2 in the league and overall.
"Nebraska Wesleyan is a team that wrestles hard," coach
Eric Van Kley said. "Their coach is a good friend of mine and their team battles. Last year, they out fought us in some matches. We really emphasized starting fast tonight and I thought we did a good job wrestling hard."
Colby Tool (sophomore, Reasnor, PCM HS) had the quickest of Central's four pins, needing just 57 seconds in his 165-pound match.
"He understands that it's a real battle of wills," Van Kley said. "Being a local guy, we've known Colby for a long time and it doesn't matter who he is going against, he's going to put it all out there. He really energized the crowd."
Gage Linahon (junior, 197 pounds, Newton) and
Peyton Hammerich (senior, Princeton, Ill.) also had first-period falls, ending their matches in 2:04 and 1:14, respectively.
Rheiner Stahlbaum (sophomore, Johnston) also won by fall at 125 pounds, taking 3:51 to earn the six points.
Miles Berg (junior, Indianola) put an exclamation point on the night with a fall at 285 pounds in 5:22.
"Miles was a 197-pounder wrestler," Van Kley said. "He's put on some weight and grown into being a heavyweight. For him to finish the night off with a pin was huge."
Brock Beck (junior, 133 pounds, Grinnell) and
Pierre Baldwin (freshman, 141 pounds, Carol Stream, Ill., West Chicago HS) won by technical fall and
Rob Areyano (fifth year, 149 pounds, Selma, Calif.) and
Luke Condy (senior, Memphis, Tenn., Christian Brothers) picked up major decisions.
Central is finished with competition for the semester and will return to action in January.
"I like the direction we are going," Van Kley said. "I've thought all along this was a team that could do some special things at end of the season if they keep improving. But right now we need to have a great week in the classroom during finals and really keep improving over break."
