Central ties record for most goals in conference match

DUBUQUE — Eight different members of the Central College women's soccer team scored goals in an 11-0 thrashing of Coe College Saturday afternoon.

The margin of victory matches Central's largest in a conference match, equaling an 11-0 win against Upper Iowa University on October 7, 1998. The Dutch (7-3-1, 1-1-1) hadn't reached double-digit goals since a 13-0 win over Crown College (Minn.) on October 6, 2015.

The first two goals of the game went to Grace Coates (sophomore, forward, Marion) who added another in the second half for her first collegiate hat trick.

"She's one of the most dangerous players in the league when she's on," Kobylinski said. "And today she was on."

Bridget Lynch (senior, defender, Northglenn, Colo., Jefferson Academy) came up from her spot in the back for two goals in the first 30 minutes of the contest, notching the first brace of her career. Paige Cahill (junior, Castle Rock, Colo., Castle View HS) had a goal and two assists, matching a career-high with four points.

Rachel Daniels (senior, midfielder, Geneseo, Ill.)
, Jadyn Jacobs (sophomore, midfielder, Washington, Ill.) and Hailey Hunter (junior, forward, Rockford, Ill., East HS) each had a goal and an assist in the contest. Abby Frey (junior, midfielder, Mesa, Ariz., Desert Ridge HS) and Esther Hughes (freshman, forward, Kalona, Iowa, Hillcrest Academy) also recorded scoring strikes.

"Anytime you can get more than a few people on the scoresheet, it's a great team win," Kobylinski said. "I was especially happy with Hailey Hunter scoring her first varsity goal. She gave us some great minutes today."

It's the seventh shutout of the season for Central but the first without 90 minutes of action by Sheila Horstmann (senior, West Des Moines, Valley HS), who made four saves before giving way to reserve keeper Bailey Lester (freshman, Sioux Falls, S.D., Washington HS) for the final 19 minutes.

"Our goal was to get another shutout after we let a few goals get away from us on Wednesday" Kobylinski said. "It was nice to play our brand defensively."

Central has a crucial home contest with Simpson College on Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. as the halfway point of the American Rivers Conference slate.

"It's a rivalry game and it's nice to play on our home pitch," Kobylinski said. "We love to make teams on our big, grass field. We're excited for it."
