Men's Track and Field

Distance crew dominant for Dutch men at Prairie Wolf Invitational

DeHaan, Jorgenson, Sylvia bag multiple top-five finishes

PELLA — Will DeHaan (senior, DeWitt, Central DeWitt HS) and the Central College men's track and field distance runners had strong performances at the Prairie Wolf Invitational Friday.

There were no team scores among the nine teams in action, including the University of Nebraska – Lincoln and the University of Wyoming.

Central dominated the men's mile with Will DeHaan (senior, DeWitt, Central DeWitt HS) leading the way in 4:16.20. Noah Jorgenson (sophomore, Sidney) was second in 4:19.94 and Adam Sylvia (junior, Rochester, Mass., Old Rochester HS) was third in 4:21.19.

The trio also had top-five efforts in the 1,000-meter run with DeHaan winning again in 2:31.80. Jorgenson was fourth (2:34.76) and Sylvia was fifth (2:34.98).

"We're very happy overall with our distance crew," Sturman said. "Will had a phenomenal day. We're impressed with how he is building off his cross country season. He's been a great leader for us on and off the track."

Triple jumper Brock Lewis (senior, Lathrop, Mo.) was second with a leap of 43 feet, 3.5 inches. He set the school record last year at 48-6.

"We're okay with where we are at," Sturman said. "It's our first week triple jumping and it's been a short week of practice. We have a ways to go to get back to last year but we're happy with how we started."

Shot putter Thomas Spoehr (senior, Bennington, Neb.) was third (45-1.75) and Theo Baldus (senior, St. Ansgar) was fourth in the weight throw (48-2). High jumper Drake Lewis (senior, Lathrop, Mo.) was fourth behind three Division I athletes after going over the bar at 6-5.75.

Lucas Heitz (junior, Adel, ADM HS) was fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.58 seconds) and pole vault (12-20). JD Elefson (freshman, Alleman, North Polk HS) was fourth in the 60-meter dash 7.26 seconds).

Central is competing in Waverly at the Wartburg Friday Night Lights meet next week.
