Major road win for Dutch women’s tennis squad

Central takes down perennial league power Kohawks

CEDAR RAPIDS — With its back to the wall, the Central College women's tennis team won the last four singles matches of the day to take a 5-4 win on the road at Coe College Saturday morning.

The Dutch (3-3, 1-0 American Rivers Conference) secured their first road win at Coe (0-1, 0-1 conference) during the conference season since 2003 with the win.

"This team fought all day long," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "They just would not quit. They've been working really hard and it showed today. I was ver proud of them."

Down 2-1 after the doubles portion of the dual, Central dropped the No. 1 and No. 2 singles match to give Coe a 4-1 advantage. Sarah Schirm (senior, Cedar Rapids, Xavier HS) was a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5 and Maddie Hartley (senior, Clarinda) was a 6-3, 6-4 winner in the No. 3 slot.

Katie Larson (senior, Fort Madison) evened the score with a 7-6, 3-6, 7-5 triumph at No. 4 and then Brianna Lindstrom (sophomore, North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) sealed the team victory by taking the No. 6 singles match 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

"Katie was down 5-2 in the third set," Ferrell said. "All of a sudden she found her groove and we went up 6-5. She broke a very good player's serve three times to get that win.

"Brianna found her confidence after losing the first set and got it done," Ferrell said.

Hartley and Alyssa Lewton (senior, Ankeny, Centennial HS) were 8-1 winners at No. 1 doubles.

The Dutch are back on the road Wednesday at Truman State University. That match is set for 4 p.m. in Kirksville, Mo.
